What is 8(a)?
The Small Business Administration (SBA) helps small businesses and small disadvantaged businesses compete on Federal contracting opportunities through their 8(a) and Small Disadvantaged Business (SDB) programs. The 8(a) Program offers a broad scope of assistance to socially and economically disadvantaged firms, SDB certification strictly pertains to benefits in federal procurement.
Firms that have been certified 8(a) by the SBA have to satisfy requirements for these criteria:
- Technical and managerial experience of the applicant firm
- Firm's operating history
- Ability of the firm to access credit and capital
- Firm's financial capacity
- Firm's record of performance
- Whether the applicant firm or individuals employed by the firm hold the requisite licenses if the firm is engaged in an industry requiring professional licensing.
